The top individual scoring performance in the state of Iowa now belongs to a member of the Spirit Lake girls basketball team. Junior KJ Veldman’s 35 points keyed the Indians 53-43 defeat of border rival Jackson County Central on Saturday. The versatile guard connected on eleven field goals, four of which were from outside the 3-point arc, and was 10-for-13 at the free throw line. The game itself witnessed numerous lead changes until a 12-0 run to start the second half put Spirit Lake ahead for good. Only three other players scored for the 14th-ranked Indians, who improve to 3-1 on the season. The Huskies top scorer was senior forward Whitney Bauermeister with thirteen points, including a 7-for-10 effort at the charity stripe. Sister Kaylee Bauermeister had nine points. The loss is Jackson County Central’s first of the season through four games. They host Luverne on Friday. Spirit Lake will open the Lakes Conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday with a home game against Cherokee, a contest that can be heard on KUOO Campus Radio.
Elsewhere in girls basketball on Saturday, North Sentral Kossuth/Armstrong-Ringsted blew by North Iowa, 56-32. No. 11 Western Christian had few problems in a 65-30 victory over Unity Christian. Sheldon topped South O’Brien, 51-34.
North of the border, Martin County West suffered a 46-33 setback against Granada-Huntley-East Chain.
