Sophomore KJ Veldman exploded for school-record 39 points in the season opener for Spirit Lake Monday night, leading the Indians to a lopsided 70-46 defeat of inter-county rival Harris-Lake Park. The guard connected on four three-pointers and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She also had nine steals, contributing to a school-record 33 total team steals. Another sophomore led Harris-Lake Park in scoring, as Lydia Brandt dropped in 15 points. Senior Christine Larson pitched in ten before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter with an injury. The 1-0 Indians are now off until December 4, when they will head north to play Jackson, MN in a girls-boys varsity doubleheader. HLP will seek their first win next week Monday with a home non-conference game with Round Lake-Brewster, MN. That will be the first of four games in five days after the holiday break for HLP.
