Tigers Make History in Class 3A Wrestling

The record setting wrestling season for Spencer continued Tuesday night as the Tigers notched their first-ever birth in the state dual championships with a thrilling 33-30 defeat of Lewis Central in the regional. The dual was even at 30 with one match remaining, and 215-pound senior Kris Rhode notched a 7-3 decision over Titans sophomore Zach Renshaw. Spencer also got wins from Trevor Streuli (103), 10-2, Bailey Hawn (112) by forfeit, John Christopherson (119) by technical fall in 5:11, Tanner Schaefer (130) by an 8-2 decision, Jack Randall (140) by fall in 5:31, and David Zobrist (189) by fall in 1:36. Spencer will open Saturday’s dual championships in Cedar Rapids as the eighth seed and draws top-ranked Iowa City West in the opening match at 10am. The other six qualifiers are Southeast Polk, Mason City, Waverly-Shell Rock, Linn-Mar, Bettendorf and Valley West Des Moines.
