Spirit Lake racked up two more victories over the weekend as
they competed in the North Union baseball
tournament in Bancroft on Saturday. The Indians opened with a resounding 14-4
decision in five innings over Clay Central-Everly, which was highlighted by a
ten-run third inning. Paul Brown went 4-for-4 to drive in five runs and score
two more, while Zach Herrig had three hits with three RBI and crossed home
twice. Nick Wetzeler got the win going four innings and allowing three runs on
five hits with five K’s. Game two was much closer, with Spirit
Lake taking a 5-4 victory over North Union. The Indians trailed by two entering the
seventh, where they rallied for three runs and the win. Nic Amundson and Tate
Hanson both went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Hanson also had plated two runs.
The senior started the game and was relieved by Brandon Stoll in the seventh,
who struck out the side to record the W. Spirit Lake, winners of six straight,
will take an 11-5 record into Monday’s home game with Emmetsburg.
The rest of the tournament saw North
Union sneak past Estherville-Lincoln Central, 7-6, although the
Midgets pounded out a 13-2 victory over the Mavericks.
Emmetsburg traveled to Britt to compete in the West Hancock
Tournament on Saturday, earning a win and a loss. The E-Hawks first lost a 6-1
contest against West Central Valley, Stuart.
Taylor Wagner had two hits and Jake Carlson suffered the loss on the hill.
Emmetsburg did rebound to blank Northwood-Kensett, 11-0 in five innings. Jake
Jackson struck out nine and Wagner tallied five RBI and two runs scored on
2-for-3 hitting. The E-Hawks have an 8-8 record ahead of Monday’s Lakes
Conference matchup at Spirit
Lake.
