Spirit Lake Splits With E’Hawks

KJ Veldman and Mary Brown each buried three triples as the Spirit Lake Indians routed the Emmetsurg E’Hawks 51-32 on Friday night in Spirit Lake.

Veldman scored a game-high 17 points while Brown added 13. Emmetsburg’s Paige Naig scored 11 of her 15 in the second half, putting in six of the 13 E’Hawk field goals.

Spirit Lake (11-3, 6-2 Lakes Conference) has now won two straight after back-to-back losses while Emmetsburg (1-10, 0-7 Lakes Conference) dropped its ninth straight game.

Down one at halftime, the Emmetsburg E’Hawks outscored Spirit Lake 15-2 in the 3rd quarter to jump head by 12. The E’Hawks never looked back from there, downing the Indians 46-33 on Friday night.

The first half saw the teams exchange the lead seven times and deadlock on five occasions. After Emmetsburg went down 21-18 out of the gate in the 3rd, the E’Hawks scored the next 15 points to take the lead 33-21. The Indians got as close as eight with 5:12 remaining but another 5-0 spurt for Emmetsburg would push them out by 12 and the E’Hawks walked from there.

Nick Wuebker led all scorers with 14 while Bobby Gappa knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, putting in 13 off the bench. No Indian scored in double figures as Mitch Peschon was the high man with eight. Spirit Lake (5-8, 1-6 Lakes Conference) has now lost four of five and takes on Okoboji on Saturday. Emmetsburg (7-3, 3-3 Lakes Conference) has split its last six games.
