Spirit Lake Softball Loses Dramatic Playoff Opener (Softball RoundUp)

Spirit Lake and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley battled back-and-forth in a Class 3A Regional game that featured three ties and five lead changes Saturday night, and the final lead change came in the form of a walkoff win for the Nighthawks by a 9-8 final. Down a run entering the bottom of the seventh, BH/RV’s Monserrat Figueroa led off with a solo home run to the opposite field, evening the game at eight. A Spirit Lake error and a walk put two runners one with one out for Kensy Vande Hoef, and the freshman dropped down a bunt. The Indians’ throw to first was off-line and the Kassidy Van Voorst raced in for the game’s winning run. Sami Ashland took the loss in relief of Cara Vale, who had allowed eight earned runs on as many hits. Emily Mercer led the offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI. Cara Vale also drove in two, Paige Krause scored twice and both were among four batters with two hits. Spirit Lake concludes the season with a 21-14 record. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley will play Monday in Spencer against Algona. The Bulldogs downed the Tigers 10-0 in six innings. Spencer was 10-23 this season.
