Spirit Lake Routs HMS, Pioneers Pounded By Emmetsburg (Baseball RoundUp)

Spirit Lake’s early season success on the baseball diamond continued Thursday with a convincing 17-3 defeat of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in five innings. The Indians staked themselves to a 6-0 lead after two innings, then added three more in the fourth before pulling away with a eight spot in the fifth. Zach Herrig sparked the attack, as he reached base five times, scored four times and smashed a solo home run to lead off the fourth. Mitch Peschon went 1-for-2 with three walks and four runs scored. Taylor Acton allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four for the win. HMS received hits from Cody Leng, Heath Nagel, Brett Flynn, Casey Dorhout, and Matt Queck. Greg Hegsted took the loss going 4 2/3 innings. The Hawks are now 2-2 overall. Spirit Lake returns home tonight with a 5-0 record to take on Emmetsburg. Emmetsburg used the long ball to take down Okoboji 17-3 in a five-inning, non-conference baseball matchup Thursday. The E-Hawks hit three home runs on the night. Bobby Gappa drove in four runs, while Joe Jackson plated three more. Taylor Wegner was the winning pitcher, as he allowed two earned runs on three his and struck out nine. Weston Berguson took the loss as he lasted less than two innings. Brian Dubois had a hit and a pair of RBI. The E-Hawks improve to 2-1 and will travel to Spirit Lake tonight. Okoboji falls to 2-3 and is at Central Lyon for a Siouxland Conference game on Friday.

In other baseball action, Sioux Center topped Sibley-Ocheyedan 8-0 and Spencer defeated Algona Bishop Garrigan 11-1.
