Two big home runs in the fourth inning sparked an offensive outburst for the Spirit Lake Indians, who defeated the rival Okoboji Pioneers 10-0 in five innings Friday night. Tyler Dean got things going with a three-run blast to center in the second, and two batters later Mitch Peschon cracked a solo shot to make it 4-0. The Indians tacked on two more runs in the third, and then three more in the fourth on two hits, two walks and an error. It ended in the fifth following an error and two straight singles. Dean finished 2-for-3, Peschon was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, Paul Brown went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, Tate Hanson had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run, and Casey Jones scored twice. Dean also struck out seven and gave up six hits in taking the win on the hill for Spirit Lake, which is now 10-2. The Pioneers, who left the bases loaded in both the second and third innings, were led by Brian Dubois’ 2-for-3 night at the plate. Dalton Syverson allowed six earned runs, walked five batters and struck out two in taking the loss. Okoboji drops to 5-6 and will play in the Emmetsburg Tournament today.
Spencer and Estherville-Lincoln Central exchange late-game rallies Friday night and in the end, the Tigers would grab a 9-8 Lakes Conference victory. Down three entering the seventh, the Midgets scored five runs to assume an 8-6 advantage, however, Spencer stormed back to plate three for the walkoff win. Brandt Illg fell a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with seven RBI for the Tigers, who are 3-1 in league play and 7-2 overall. Joe Clayton paced Estherville with three runs batted in on 1-for-3 hitting. The Midgets are 4-7 on the year and 2-3 in the Lakes.
An extra-inning walkoff RBI by Nathan Westphal plated Cody Leng on Friday and gave Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn the win over Akron-Westfield. Matt Queck pitched to the win as the Hawks are now 6-2 in War Eagle play.
