There
was plenty of hitting on display Thursday in Lake
Park as county rivals Spirit Lake
and Harris-Lake Park took to the softball diamond. The
Indians used 17 hits to power their way to a 16-9 non-conference victory. Emily
Mercer and Carly Ites both collected three hit nights, while four others had
two hits each. Cara Vale and Amanda Bueltel each drove in four runs and scored
three more. Vale also picked up the win in the circle despite allowing seven
earned runs over four innings. Spirit Lake improves to 2-1, while Harris-Lake Park
drops to 0-2 to start the year.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn
received a surprise home game Thursday as wet conditions at South O’Brien
forced a location change between the War Eagle rivals. The Hawks took advantage
with an 8-3 victory. Kori Boll had two hits and two runs batted in, while
Kendra Zeutenhorst notched the complete game victory with four strikeouts. HMS
is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Twelfth-ranked Estherville Lincoln Central traveled to Forest City
to pick up a 13-7 victory Thursday. The Midgets racked up 15 hits offensively,
and senior right-hander Kendall Bosch struck out eight of the first nine
batters she faced. ELC improves to 2-0.
On the baseball field, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire
picked up a non-conference, road win over Sibley-Ocheyedan by a 6-4 margin. The
win is GT/RA’s first of the season, putting their record at 1-1. The Generals
open the season with loss.
