Spirit Lake Park, Okoboji Both Claim Team Titles (Track & Field RoundUp)


Behind six first-place finishes, the Spirit Lake Park boys’ track and field team claimed yet another team title, this time at the Storm Lake Co-ed. SLP topped the points standings with 134, edging out second-place MOC-Floyd Valley at 128. Spencer wound up third with 99 points, followed by LeMars in fourth (62), Carroll Kuemper Catholic fifth (41), Storm Lake sixth (38), Estherville-Lincoln Central seventh (33), and Cherokee eighth (22). Individual winners for the Indians included Bryson McCabe in the 100-meter dash (11.86), Luke Kabele in the 200-meter dash (23.23), Kevin Martinson in the 400-meter hurdles (55.76), Keith Byers in the 800-meters (1:58.85), and Will Norris in the 3200-meters (10:04.01). Needing one more victory to claim the meet title, SLP’s 4×100 of Austin Folsom, Kabele, Aric Waltz, McCabe came through, breaking the tape in 44.50.

Sibley-Ocheyedan hosted its annual co-ed track and field meet, and on the boys side of the competition, Okoboji proved to be the top dog. The Pioneers secured 148 points to finish first, with Western Christian in second at 124 points. Sheldon came in third (94), followed by the Generals in fourth (69), Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley fifth (64), Central Lyon sixth (34), Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn seventh (13), and Trinity Christian eighth (11). Okoboji capped the night with an impressive ten wins. Zach Jones crossed the finish line first in the 110-meter hurdles (14.77) and the 400-meter hurdles (55.35), setting new meet records in both. Jordan Hanna was a two-time winner in the 400-meters (53.81) and the 800-meters (2:07.62). Alex Koepp took the 200-meter dash (23.35), while Dalton Syverson won the high jump (6’1″). In the relays, the Pioneers broke the tape in the 4×400 (Chris Albright, Taylor Cody, Syverson, Jones; 3:30.96), the 4×800 (Cody, Joe Hilsabeck, Mark Nielsen, Hanna; 8:30.41), the Medley relay (Tyeson Barnett, Gabe Goehring, Nielsen, Cody; 3:47.71), and the Shuttle Hurdle (Koepp, Albright, Syverson, Jones; 58.79), which set a new meet record.
