Several area cross country teams participated in the Algona Invitational on Monday, and two local boys teams show they belong among the region’s best. Spirit Lake (109) and Okoboji (136) finished third and fourth, respectively. Webster City won the title with 82 points, followed by Charles City at 84 points. The individual race again featured two Indians ahead of the pack. Will Norris’ time of 15:51 narrowly surpassed his teammate, Keith Byers (15:58), by seven seconds to take the crown and leave Byers with second-place honors. Okoboji’s Joe Hilsabeck came in sixth place at 17:00 even.
Fairmont, Minnesota won the girls race with 73 points, with Spencer taking second at 116 points. Okoboji’s team score of 318 points was good for thirteenth, while Spirit Lake tallied a 319 total to take 14th. Clare Eckard paced the Pioneers with a 24th-place finish in 16:35. Tops for the Indians was Liz Skogerboe at 17:03, placing her in 38th place.
The Indians run again Thursday in Sioux City. The Pioneers are off until October 4 at Cherokee.
