Three girls tennis players from Spirit Lake-Okoboji are heading to state in the Iowa Class 1A singles and doubles tournament. KJ Veldman defeated Natalie Miller of LeMars in straight sets to grab the singles crown at the Regional meet in Spencer, completing an improbable upset. The unranked freshman battled her way through the meet’s 4th, 3rd and 1st ranked players en route to her first trip to state. Alli Gerking and Aubry Kolegraff took down the top duo of Kaylene Vos and Erin Olson of Estherville-Lincoln Central in two sets for the doubles title. Shirley Coenen and Jamie Kohlhaase just missed out on state with a third place finish. The state meet is June 3-4 in Iowa City.
