A tie-game was broken up by a pair of home runs as the Spirit Lake baseball team pulled away from Emmetsburg for an 8-1 win on the road in Lakes Conference play. Cody Poock belted a two-run homer and Zach Herrig hit a solo shot to lead the Indians offense. Taylor Acton limited the E-Hawks to six hits and struck out seven batters for the win. Emmetsburg was paced by Brady Berkland and Jake Jackson, who both notched two hits. At 0-12, Emmetsburg will try for their first conference win again Friday at Cherokee. Spirit Lake will take their 9-3 conference mark to Estherville-Lincoln Central this evening.
Okoboji baseball twice left the bases loaded, while Sheldon capitalized with a grand slam as part of an 8-1 Orabs victory over the Pioneers in Siouxland Conference play on Thursday. Daniel Westphalen smacked the bases-clearing round-tripper in the fourth to put Sheldon ahead by six. Dalton Syverson struck out five and allowed seven hits in taking the loss. He also went 1-for-3 and drove in the lone run for the Pioneers. Brian Dubois had two hits and Zach Jones scored the lone run. The loss is Okoboji’s ninth in a row, dropping their conference record to 4-8. They will host the Dutch of MOC-Floyd Valley for a doubleheader on Friday.
Also on Thursday, Sibley-Ocheyedan notched an impressive win over seventh-ranked Clay Central-Everly by a 7-1 final.
