All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held Sunday, January 15 at 1 p.m. at the Spirit Lake High School new gymnasium. Registration and practice begins at 12:30 p.m.
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls 10 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Last year more then 130,000 sharpshooters participated in more than 3,000 local competitions.
The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.8 million members in more than 14,000 local councils. Last year, Knights donated 69 million volunteer hours and $151 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, councils, communities, families and youth.
Iowa Great Lakes Council 5043 sponsors other youth events including the Soccer Shootout and the Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee. They also run the Soup and Pie Supper in November, and the Tootsie Roll Drive for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Labor Day weekend, benefiting local organizations.
