SPIRIT LAKE – Eight girls and boys ages 10 to 14 participated in the 2010 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and five earned the right to compete at the district level. Iowa Great Lakes Council 5043 in Spirit Lake sponsored the local competition at Spirit Lake High School. All youngsters ages 10 to 14 were eligible to participate.
Hannah Jennings was the 10-year-old girls’ champion, Billy Brown was the winner of the 11-year-old boys’ division, and Ellie Katzfey was the 11-year-old girls’ winner. In the 12-year-olds’ bracket, Caleb Jennings was the boys’ champion. The thirteen-year-old winner in the boys’ division was Holt Hunziker.
Logan Backhaus, Jeremiah Eldridge and Tony Eckert were the other participants in the 12-year-old boys’ bracket. Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts.
Each winner received a plaque and certificate, and is eligible to compete in the district competition in Spencer February 14 at 1 p.m., with an eye toward moving on to the regional, state and international levels. Spirit Lake’s Kaisha Brown won the international level competition a few years ago.
