Spirit Lake Girls Golf Headed to State, Okoboji Narrowly Misses

History made and a fourth consecutive trip to the state team golf meet booked by the Spirit Lake Indians girls golf squad Monday as they notched their first Class 3A regional title in Storm Lake. The Indians tallied a 372 team total, dominating the rest of the competition by more than 26 strokes. MOC-Floyd Valley finished second at 398 to qualify. Senior Maureen Owens is the individual regional champ with a ridiculous round of 80. Teammates Emily Ayers and Whitney Berkland also made the top five, with Ayers carding a 93 to take fourth and Berkland a 96 to tie for fifth. The Class 3A state meet will be held at River Valley Golf Course in Adel, Iowa on May 31 and June 1.

At the Class 2A regional, the Okoboji girls’ golf team fell five strokes shy of qualifying as a team and wound up in fourth place overall. The Pioneers recorded a 405 team score at Emmetsburg, while Carroll Kuemper Catholic was tops at 367 and Alta-Aurelia second with an even 400. The E-Hawks tallied a 412 on their home course to finish fifth. The Pioneers were led by Kiley Wermersen, whose round of 95 put her a shot off the mark to make it to state as an individual. Kristina Kaiser had a 100, Hannah Jones a 101, and Halee Morrow a 109. Emmetsburg’s Megan Myers carded a 91 to tie for second and qualify for state as an individual. She will compete at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny, Iowa for the Class 2A meet next week Tuesday and Wednesday.
