Spirit Lake Girls Bounce Back; Boys Drop Third Straight In Lakes Action

GIRLS

After a loss to Storm Lake on Tuesday, the no-longer-ranked Spirit Lake girls picked up a win on Friday night over Cherokee 76-37. The Indians rolled over a Cherokee Braves team that was winless in six games and has now dropped 31 straight games dating back to February of 2008. Eleven Indians scored including Chelsie Stettnichs, who scored double figures for the 3rd straight game. The senior scored 15 on Friday to lead the Indians while 32 points came off the bench.

Cherokee took a lead at 15-14 but from there, Spirit Lake scored 41 of the next 51 points. Mary Brown and Briana Brunsvold also added 10 apiece. Spirit Lake (6-1, 3-1 Lakes Conference) is back at it on Monday night with a non-conference matchup at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn which can be heard on Y100 with a 6:00 pm pregame.

BOYS

Spirit Lake trailed from the start of the second half on and the Cherokee Braves delivered the third loss in four games with a 58-53 decision over the Indians.

Drew Dau knocked down his first five field goals, including three triples, to spark a 13-2 run in the 1st quarter, giving the Indians a six-point lead. But the Braves snatched the edge in the 3rd and never looked back. Mitch Peschon once again led the Indians with 16 while Dau, after a 13-point first half, finished the game with 15. Head Coach John Walz said after the game that his team needed to score inside more and that point was proven by the fact that Cherokee outscored Spirit Lake in the paint 30-16.

Spirit Lake (3-3, 0-3 Lakes Conference) will head to Boyden-Hull for a non-conference matchup on Saturday night, a contest rescheduled from January 4th.
