The Spirit Lake football team started fast against Estherville on Friday night scoring an 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Austin Folsom to set the pace and win 40 – 25. Estherville would quickly answer and get a fumble recovery by Robert Sheridan and run it back 20 yards to tie it up at 7. It would continue to go back and forth and at halftime Spirit Lake would lead 20-13. In the second half, ELC would score on a Justin Heinrichs 4 yard run and miss the extra point. Spirit Lake would still lead 20-19. On the ensuing kickoff, Spirit Lake’s Caleb Jennings takes it 91 yards for touchdown that put the Indians up 27-19. Estherville would respond with a 1 yard run by Justin Heinrichs and miss the extra point. Spirit Lake is up 27-25 and would add 2 more late touchdowns to seal the win.
Spirit Lake would get 272 yards of offense with 274 coming thru the air. ELC would have 277 yards with 182 in the air. The Indians were led by Austin Folsom. He had a huge night. 1 punt return for 71 yd TD, 2 kickoffs for 109 yds and 1 TD, 7 receptions for 232
yds and 2 TD’s……total 4 TD’s and 412 yds. Estherville was led by Justin Heinrichs going 11-19 for 182 yards passing. He also rushed 12 times for 74 yards.
Spirit Lake is 1 – 0 and will be at Forest City next Friday on KUOO. Estherville falls to 0 – 1 and will host Algona
