The boys cross country team from Spirit Lake wasted no time picking up where they left off last fall, winning the Spencer Invitational held at Spencer Municipal Golf Course on Thursday. The Indians finished with 42 points, five better than the host Tigers. Emmetsburg ran to a seventh-place finish (159). Keith Byers of Spirit Lake earned his first career individual cross country title, breaking the tape at 15:15. Will Norris was right on his heels, taking second at 15:36. Also in the top ten were Kyle Anderson (4, 16:54) and Tanner Goetsch (9, 17:22). Harris-Lake Park cross country runner Kane Feldick finished 17th at 17:42.
The girls portion of the Spencer Invitational was won by LeMars with 69 points. Algona was second (89), Spencer third (95), Estherville-Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringsted fourth (95), Spirit Lake seventh (145), and Emmetsburg ninth (240).
