Spirit Lake Boys Get First Lakes Win; Girls Struggle in Second Half

GIRLS

In a matchup of two teams tied for second place in the Lakes Conference, the Spirit Lake Indians invited the Estherville-Lincoln Central to town on Friday night. But for the Indians, the second half legs just didn’t seem to be there as Spirit Lake scored just five field goals in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Estherville Lincoln Central delivered Spirit Lake’s second loss of the season by a final of 51-41. The Indians went just 15-52 from the floor for a 29% clip, and ELC’s Kelsie McCauley scored 13 of her 21 in the second half.

Mary Brown and Chelsie Stettnichs each scored 10 as the Indians (9-2, 5-2 Lakes Conference) dropped to 3rd place behind Storm Lake and ELC. Spirit Lake will take a sabbatical from conference play for its next two contests, beginning with a matchup with Sibley-Ocheyedan on Saturday.

BOYS

Spirit Lake put three in double figures, five players scored eight or more, and the Indians picked up their first conference win of the season with a 56-48 topping of Estherville-Lincoln Central on Friday night. In a contest featuring a pair of clubs each looking for its first win in conference play, the Indians had lost five of six coming in while ELC had dropped five straight. The Indians were banged around on the glass in the first half but would even things up in the second stanza. It wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing victory but head coach John Walz was happy to get the proverbial monkey off the Indians’ back. Spirit Lake shot 41% from the floor, got 12 points from Mitch Peschon and 10 apiece from Drew Dau and Paul Brown en route to the win. The Indians (1-5, Lakes Conference) work a non-conference contest at home tonight against Sibley-Ocheyedan.
