The Spirit Lake Park boys track and field team is off to a solid start in 2011. Competing in the Buena Vista Elite Indoor meet over the weekend, the Indians brought home some hardware and broke two school records. The medley relay of Luke Kabele, Aric Waltz, Kayne Feldick, and Alec Baldwin broke a 23-year old record by more than four seconds with their first-place time of 3:40.03. The 4×200 relay team of Kabele, Waltz, Kevin Martinson, and Mychal Sheridan grabbed the gold in 1:37.64, while Kabele, Waltz, Martinson, and Feldick were tops in the 4×400 at 3:38.94.
In the 1600m, Keith Byers and Will Norris finished 1-2 for SLP. Byers ran 4:34.47 and Norris was 4:50.85. Baldwin broke the indoor school record in the 400m with a time of 51.9, and finished in second place.
In the field events, DJ Smith took the bronze with a long jump of 18’ 4.25”.
