SLP Tops at Okoboji Meet, Pioneers Right Behind (Track & Field RoundUp)

Spirit Lake Park and Okoboji were the top two track and field teams on both sides of the competition Monday in Milford. The boys’ portion of the meet saw the Indians tally 161 team points to claim the team title, ahead of the second-place Pioneers at 126. Sioux Center was third (79), South O’Brien fourth (69), Sioux Central fifth (52), Sibley-Ocheyedan sixth (39), North Union seventh (25), and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn eighth (3). SLP won eight events on the night. Bryson McCabe was the fastest in the 100-meters dash (11.05) and the 200-meters (22.97), while Kevin Martinson won the 400-meters (51.54), Keith Byers broke the tape in the 1600-meter run (4:27.00), and Will Norris was tops in the 3200-meter (9:48.47). The Indians also sent three relays to the top of the medal stand, including the 4×100 (Luke Kabele, Aric Waltz, McCabe, Martinson; 44.09), the 4×200 (Kabele, Waltz, McCabe, Austin Folsom; 1:31.85), and the Medley Relay team (Folsom, Rodney Phifer, Caleb Jennings, Kayne Feldick; 3:45.29).

For the Pioneers, Zach Jones won the 110-meter hurdles (14.67), and Dalton Syverson dominated the high jump (6’2″). Okoboji also finished first in the 4×400 relay (3:28.73) and the 4×800 relay (8:33.36)

The girls’ competition was heavily controlled by Spirit Lake Park, with the Indians taking the team trophy with an impressive 210 points and winning a dozen events. Okoboji finished second at 103, followed by Sioux Center third (68), North Union fourth (57), Sibley-Ocheyedan fifth (41), Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn sixth (40), South O’Brien seventh (35), and Emmetsburg eighth (32). Individually for SLP, Jenna McCoy won gold in both the high jump (4’8″) and the long jump (15’5.5″), as well as in the 400-meter hurdles (70.48). Taylor Sieperda picked up a pair of gold’s, taking first in the 200-meter dash (26.29) and the 400-meter dash (59.44). Dondi Schmidt won the 1500-meters (5:14.08) and 3000-meters (11:32.12), while Julie Sjuve crossed the finish line first in the 100-meter dash (13.00). In the relays, Spirit Lake Park took first in the 4×100 (Sjuve, Kendra Stokke, Abbey Horsman, Miranda Brueggeman; 52.99), the 4×200 (Sjuve, Stokke, Bailey Loveall, Brueggeman; 1:51.93), the 4×400 relay (Emma Dau, Stokke, Sieperda, Loveall; 4:15.53), and the Sprint Medley relay (Horsman, Loveall, Brueggeman, Sieperda; 1:58.06).

Of the remaining events, Okoboji won two of them. Abby Taylor ended the night with best throw in the discuss (101’3″) and the Pioneers won the Shuttle Hurdle Relay (1:13.32).
