The new Sheryl Maas Track in Spirit Lake hosted its first co-ed relays Tuesday, and the home field advantage led to team trophies for the Spirit Lake Park girls and boys. On the girls side, the Indians (214.5) beat out second place Spencer (172), who was followed by Estherville-Lincoln Central (123) in third, Okoboji (76) fourth, North Union (69.5) fifth, South O’Brien (41) sixth, Forest Ridge (10) seventh, and Clay Central-Everly (9) eighth. SLP was paced by eleven first place finishes. Individually, Taylor Sieperda won both the 100- (12.95) and 200-meter dashes (26.69), Mikey Heikens did the same in the 800-meter run (2:37.04), Dondi Schmidt controlled the pace in the 1500-meters (5:22.20), and Kendra Stokke broke the tape in the 400-meter hurdles (72.14). In the field events, Emily Mercer owned the top throw in the discuss (100’2″) and Jenna McCoy won the long jump (16’4″). The Indians also ran to first place times in the 4×100 relay (Julie Sjuve, Stokke, Abbey Horsman, Miranda Brueggeman; 53.66), the 4×200 relay (Sjuve, Stokke, Carter Hassel, Brueggeman; 1:54.88), the 4×400 relay (Emma Dau, Bailey Loveall, Caitlin Eckerman, Sieperda; 4:27.10), and the Distance Medley relay (Hassel, Horsman, Eckerman, Heikens; 4:41.31).
Spencer locked in five first-place finishes, while Estherville-Lincoln Central had the remaining three.
On the boys side, Spirit Lake Park (153.5) outpaced the competition by better than 50 points. Okoboji was second at 101.5, followeby by South O’Brien (88) in third, Sioux Central and Emmetsburg (74) tied for fourth, Clay Central-Everly (69) was sixth, Estherville-Lincoln Central (68) seventh, and North Union (32) eighth. SLP received a monster night from Luke Kabele, who took home gold medals in the 100 (11.69), 200 (23.24), and 400-meter (52.94) dashes, as well as the long jump (19’11”). Kevin Martinson set a meet record winning a hotly contested 400-meter hurdles race in 55.71. Other individual winners included Will Norris in the 800-meters (2:05.45), Keith Byers in the 1600m (4:53.40), and Kyle Anderson in the 3200m (10:47.19). Jacob Jenness took top honors in the discuss with a throw of 132’3″. The Indians also collected a top finish in the 4×800 relay (Martinson, Kayne Feldick, Will Norris, Keith Byers), setting another new meet record at 8:13.03, along with the Medley Relay (Austin Folsom, Caleb Jennings, Feldick, Paul Woizeschke) in 3:54.23.
The Okoboji Pioneers received an individual first place honor from Dalton Syverson in the high jump at an even six-feet. The Pioneers also boast the top 4×400 relay team (Chris Albright, Taylor Cody, Syverson, Mark Nielsen), running a time of 3:39.18.
