Two local boys track and field teams dominated their respective classes at the MOC-Floyd Valley Dutch Relays on Tuesday. Spirit Lake Park ran away with the Class A title, notching 165 team points. LeMars was second at 121. SLP won nine events, including all but one of the individual running events. Luke Kabele grabbed gold in three events, the 400m (52.24), 200m (23.5) and 100m (11.67). Alec Baldwin ran to two first place finishes in the 1600m (4:51.42) and 800m (1:57.79). Will Norris was atop the medal stand in the 3200m (10:01.91) and Kevin Martinson did the same in the 400 hurdles (58.08). The Spirit Lake Park Medley Relay (Aric Waltz, Mychal Sheridan, Kayne Feldick, Will Norris – 3:46.28) and 4×200 relay (Waltz, Sheridan, Martinson, Cody Poock – 1:35.20) were top dogs, as was Dalton Kelley in the discuss, with a throw of 146’7”. SLP went on to secure second place finishes with Keith Byers in the 3200m (10:02.15), Kayne Feldick in the 400m (52.5), as well as the Shuttle Hurdle (DJ Smith, Martinson, Poock, Waltz – 63.47), 4×100 (Pat Woizeschke, Smith, Casey Spaeth, Sheridan – 47.78), 4×400 (Martinson, Waltz, Kabele, Paul Woizeschke – 3:34.69) and 4×800 (Kyle Anderson, Paul Woizeschke, Tanner Goetsch, Baldwin – 8:31.58). The Indians lone third bronze medal was in the 800m with Keith Byers (2:01.75).
Okoboji narrowly found itself atop the standings in the Class B competition, as their 137 team points bested Unity Christian by two. Sibley-Ocheyedan finished fifth with 55 points. The Pioneers racked up six first place winners. Zach Jones earned gold in the 110 high hurdles (15.56) and 400 hurdles (56.47). Alex Koepp’s jump of 20’3” was tops in the long jump. Okoboji also finished first in the 4×800 relay (Jordan Hanna, Ethan Millard, Chris Albright, Austin Millard – 8:58), the Shuttle Hurdle (Brian Dubois, Koepp, Dalton Syverson, Jones – 1:03), and the Medley relay (Koepp, Taylor Cody, Dubois, A. Millard – 3:53.56). In second place was Brian Dubois in the high jump (5’10”), Joe Hilsabeck in the 3200m (11:00), Jordan Hanna in the 800m (2:14), and the 4×400 relay (A. Millard, Dubois, Cody, Koepp – 3:24). Jordan Hanna also took third in the 1600m (5:01) and Dalton Syverson grabbed bronze in the 800m (2:16).
On the girls side, Spirit Lake Park took third in the Class A competition with 93 points. MOC-Floyd Valley’s 186 was tops, with Western Christian in second at 153. Brianna Brunsvold secured a first place time in the 3000m (12:02.32) and Dondi Schmidt did the same in the 1500m (5:35.92). Silver medals went to Emily Mercer in the shot put (35’3”) and Bailey Loveall in the 400m (65.69). Molly Hutchins’ discuss throw of 105’3” was good for third, while the Shuttle Hurdle relay (Kendra Stokke, Miranda Bruggeman, Kayla Herrig, Kaela Delperdang – 77.34) and 4×200 relay (Carter Hassel, Lindsey Arneson, Herrig, Bruggeman – 1:59.14) also finished in third.
In Class B it was Sibley-Ocheyedan winning the team title with 139 points. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished third with 97 points and Okoboji fourth with 86.5 points. For the Pioneers, Darby Jones reached the top of the podium in the high jump (4’8”), as did the 4×200 relay (1:51.18) and the 4×100 relay (52.56). Second place finishes went to Clare Eckard in the 3000m (11:48.45) and the 1500m (5:31.32), Taylor Poppema in the 100m hurdles (16.68), and Bryanna Wittrock in the 200m (28.33). Caoena Krivilavy wound up in third place in the discus (84’8”). As for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, they tallied four first place finishes. Brenna Sweeney ran through the tape first in the 400m (1:04.95), while also taking second in the 800m (2:39.49). Sarah Ney was first in both the 100m (13.11) and the 200m (27.4), plus a runner-up finish in the long jump (15’5.25”). In the shot put, Onica Jacobs was the best by nearly seven feet at 35”4.5’. And Taylor Sweeney also got in the act with a second place time in the 100m (14.19) and 200m (29.67).
