SLP Dominates Okoboji Relays, Pioneers Set School Records (Boys Track & Field)

Okoboji hosted its annual track and field relays on Monday. Spirit Lake Park won the boys portion of the competition with 124 team points, besting Sioux Center who finished second at 103. Okoboji grabbed third with a 102 total, followed by South O’Brien in fourth, Sioux Central fifth, NSK/A-R sixth, Sibley-Ocheyedan seventh, and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn eighth. SLP was highlighted by six first place finishes. Keith Byers won both the 800m (2:06.95) and 1600m (4:31.07 – Meet Record) runs, Alec Baldwin crossed the finish line first in the 3200m (9:51.23 – Meet Record), and the Indians were also tops in the 4x200m (Luke Kabele, Aric Waltz, Mychal Sheridan, Kevin Martinson – 1:33.58), 4x800m (Martinson, Will Norris, Kayne Feldick, Tanner Goetsch – 8:32.25) and distance medley (DJ Smith, Casey Spaeth, Sheridan, Baldwin – 3:49.08) relays. Okoboji benefited from three gold medal performances. Zach Jones set a school record in winning the 110m hurdles (14.40). He also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team of Brian Dubois, Alex Koepp, and Dalton Syverson as they, too, set a school record (1:00.11). Dubois was first in the high jump at 6’2”. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s night was paced by Justin Wohlert, who finished first in both the 100m dash (11.35) and the long jump (20’7.75”). Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Grant Greenfield also grabbed double gold, winning the shot put (43’6”) and the discuss (150’9”).
