The Lakes Conference held its traditional indoor track and field meet at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake on Tuesday. The Spirit Lake Park boys’ team was able to secure six first place medals, along with one second and two third place finishes. Individually, Bryson McCabe broke the tape first in the 55-meter run at a time of 6.61 seconds. The 200-meter race belonged to Luke Kabele with a time of 23.27 seconds, and Will Norris topped the competition in the 1600-meter race at 4:43.95. On the relay side SLP took gold in the 4×200 (Kevin Martinson, Aric Waltz, Austin Folsom, Bryson McCabe) at 1:34.70, the 4×400 (Kabele, Martinson, Waltz, Keith Byers) in 3:32.89, and the 4×800 (Byers, Martinson, Kayne Feldick, Norris) with a time of 8:12.55. The lone second place came from Kabele in the long jump, at a distance of 20’4″.
The girls of Spirit Lake Park were consistently on the cusp of the top spot on the medal stand, securing just two first place times. However, the Indians collected five seconds and two thirds to propel themselves to the top of the point’s standings to earn the Lakes Conference Indoor championship. The two gold medals came from Taylor Sieperda, who established a new indoor school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.02 seconds, and Dondi Schmidt in the 1500-meters, as she crossed the finish line in 5:20.24. SLP earned the number two spot in the high jump (Jenna McCoy – 4’10”), long jump (Emma Dau – 16’1/2″), 55-meter dash (Jenna McCoy – 9.06), shuttle hurdle relay (Jenna McCoy, Miranda Brueggeman, Kendra Stokke, Kaela Delperdang – 41.71), and 4×400 relay (Bailey Loveall, Emma Dau, Kendra Stokke, Taylor Sieperda – 4:19.22). The run by McCoy in the 55 meters, along with the two relays, established new indoor school records.
