SLP Boys Tops Again, Girls Host Annual Sheryl Maahs Relays

The Spirit Lake Park girls track and field team hosted their annual Sheryl Maahs Relays in Spirit Lake on Tuesday. The overall team title went to the Algona Bulldogs with 116 points. SLP finished second with 91 points, Estherville-Lincoln Central was third (85), Emmetsburg fourth (53), and Martin County West, MN fifth (47). Individually, the Indians recorded three first place finishes. Molly Hutchins had the furthest discuss throw at 102’4”, Kendra Stokke won the 400m hurdles in 70.64 seconds, and the 4x200m relay team of Carter Hassel, Lindsey Arneson, Stokke, and Miranda Brueggeman crossed the tape first in 1:53.47.

The boys track and field team of Spirit Lake Park blew away the competition at the Tornado Relays in Storm Lake, taking the team trophy by 40 points. Their 129 total outpaced Carroll Kuemper Catholic’s 89 points in second. Spencer finished fifth with 60 and Estherville-Lincoln Central was eighth with 35. Individual winners for the Indians include Alec Baldwin, who set the school record in the 800m with a time of 1:57.25 and also won the 400m (50.28), Luke Kabele won the 200m in 23.00 seconds, Kevin Martinson was first in the 400 hurdles running 56.58 seconds, Keith Byers’ time of 4:36.35 in the 1600m was good for first, as was Will Norris’ 9:58.13 time in the 3200m, and Dalton Kelley got the gold in the discuss with a throw of 147’11”. SLP also had the top relay teams in the 4×400 (Kabele, Aric Waltz, Martinson, Casey Spaeth) and the medley relay (Spaeth, DJ Smith, Kayne Feldick, Byers – 3:32.71).According to coach Brad Travis, every member of the team set at least one new personal record during the meet and there were 41 total for SLP.
