The boys track and field team from Spirit Lake Park finished second among 30 teams from several midwestern states at the University of Minnesota Indoor Championships on Saturday. SLP finished with 27 points, five behind overall winner White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Highlighting the day was junior Keith Byers breaking the school record as he won the 1600 meter run. His time of 4:25.81 was more than a second better than Alec Baldwin’s record time from earlier this year. Baldwin had his moment, as well, taking the gold in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:45.60. The senior also finished second in the 800 meter run (1:58.29). Spirit Lake Park’s 4×400 relay team of Kevin Martinson, Aric Waltz, Luke Kabele, and Kayne Feldick grabbed a silver medal (3:34.69) as well and just missed the school record by nine-hundredths of the second. That same group wound up in fourth place in the medley relay (3:47.85). For the day, Spirit Lake Park’s athletes set 21 personal records.
