In their bid to reach the state semifinals of the girls Class 1A state tennis tournament, Spirit Lake-Okoboji would come up just short against perennial power Red Oak in the first round of state on Monday. SL-O dropped a 5-3 decision in Storm Lake. Hannah Coenen (6-4, 6-2) and Rachel Westergard (6-3, 6-3) secured the only wins in singles competition. Alli Gerking (2-6, 4-6), Aubrey Kolegraff (2-6, 2-6), KJ Veldman (4-6, 6-7 (2)), and Holly Seemann (0-6, 1-6) all suffered setbacks in their singles matches. Gerking and Kolegraff teamed up to take the first doubles match 6-2, 6-4, keeping hope alive, however, Coenen and senior Jamie Kohlhaase dropped a 2-6, 1-6 match to give Red Oak the win and the trip to Waterloo. Spirit Lake-Okoboji ends the team dual season with just one loss. Gerking, Kolegraff and Veldman will all still compete in the individual state tennis meet June 2-3 in Waterloo.
