Saturday Night Girls 3A/4A Regional Basketball

overcame poor shooting in the first quarter and then held Garner-Hayfield/Ventura to just 11 points in the second half as the Indians won the Girls Class 3A Region 2 Basketball Final 51-37 in Algona Saturday night. The win gives the Indians their first birth to the state basketball tournament since 2007. G-H/V led 17-8 after one quarter but Spirit Lake made it a three point game at half 26-23. In the second half, the Indians defensive pressure got to the Cardinals as G-H/V committed 30 turnovers in the game. Spirit Lake senior KJ Veldman led all scorers with 25 points. She was a perfect 17-for-17 at the free throw line. Veldman also had 10 rebounds and 5 steals. Junior Bri Bier led G-H/V with 13 points, 11 of which came in the first half. The Cardinals season ends at 16-8. The Indians improve to 16-8. They will face Lakes Conference rival Estherville-Lincoln Central on Tuesday, February 26th at 5:00pm at Wells-Fargo Arena in Des Moines for the opening round of the girl’s state basketball tournament. The Midgets advanced to the state tournament for the third straight year by trouncing Nevada 62-31 on Saturday night. E-LC is 21-3.



In Class 4A regional basketball on Saturday night, Spencer beat Humboldt 60-46 at the Field House. The Tigers will now face Bishop Heelan who defeated LeMars 59-53. That contest will be held on Tuesday night in Cherokee at 7:00pm.
