In softball, the final 16 tickets to the state tournament in
Ft. Dodge were solidified on Tuesday night.
In Class 4A, LeMars was unable to make it three teams from the Lakes Conference
to qualify for the 2012 tourney. The Bulldogs dropped a close, 2-1, affair to
ninth-ranked Sioux City Bishop Heelan. The Crusaders (31-6) will play Tuesday,
July 17 against Dallas Center-Grimes (33-5) in the opening round. The rest of
the matchups include Carlisle (32-8) against Washington (31-8), Indianola
(28-11) taking on Winterset (29-13), and Clear Creek-Amana (41-1) battling West Delaware (30-10).
The inaugural Class 5A field includes Ankeny (33-6) matching
up with Marshalltown (21-21), Ottumwa (34-8) taking on Iowa City West (36-6),
Pleasant Valley (32-6) will meet Dowling Catholic (25-15), and defending 4A
champion Des Moines East (31-5) squaring off with Davenport West (31-10).
