The season is off to a good start for the girls basketball team from Okoboji after a season-opening 39-37 victory at Siouxland Conference rival Sibley-Ocheyedan on Tuesday. The Pioneers saw six girls reach the scoring column, led by sophomore Darby Jones’ thirteen points off the bench. Hannah Marsh and Mikkinzie Peschong both pitched in with six points a piece. The Generals had a pair of players with outstanding performances, as Bridget Doeden and Alyssa Hibbing each registered a double-double. Doeden poured in a game-high 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting, to go along with ten rebounds. Hibbing scored ten points and hauled down a game-high thirteen boards. Sibley-Ocheyedan will get another crack at win number one on Monday when they host South O’Brien. The Pioneers hit the road again in league play on Tuesday when Okoboji travels to Sioux Center.

The season opener for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn revealed some early flaws for the Hawks in a 46-19 setback at Sioux Central. HMS received points from four players, with Jessica Stofferan topping the list at six points. Morgan Walker led all scorers with 19 for the Rebels. The senior also had eight rebounds and four steals. The home opener for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn will come Tuesday against Clay Central-Everly. That girls-boys doubleheader will be covered live on Q102.
