Three local girls basketball players are being recognized by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for the superb play this season, and all three will be back again next season. Spirit Lake sophomore K.J. Veldman was named to the Class 3A All-State Second-Team after averaging 21.2 points per game, which was fourth best in the state of Iowa. The 5’6” shooting guard was also first in the Lakes Conference with 4.5 steals a night and seventh in rebounding at 7.0 per game.
Estherville-Lincoln Central’s run to a runner-up finish in the Class 2A state tournament resulted in two players garnering all-state recognition. Junior Alyssa Johnson is a First-Team honoree after scoring a team-high 11.8 points a game. The 6’2” center finished fourth in the Lakes Conference with 6.6 boards per game and recorded 65 blocks on the season, which was tops in the league. Her teammate, sophomore Emily Kirchner, received Second-Team All-State honors after dropping in 11.0 points a game. She was just ahead of Johnson with 6.9 rebounds.
