Okoboji Ecstatic About Return of Varsity Football



There is a renewed energy surrounding Okoboji High School athletics entering the 2012-2013 school year, and that enthusiasm was on display Thursday in Milford as the Pioneers hosted their Fall Sports Preview Night. The biggest storyline is the return of varsity football, following a one-year hiatus due to low numbers. Okoboji will compete in Class 1A, with the season opener at county rival Spirit Lake next Friday. That game can be heard on KUOO Campus Radio.

Inside the gymnasium is another program undergoing a change at the top. Eric Thompson steps into his first year as head girls volleyball coach, but will look to five experienced returning players to help push Okoboji back near the top of the Siouxland. Thompson has also instilled a new attitude…(click here for comment from coach Thompson). The Pioneers went 13-16 last fall and open their newest campaign next Thursday at the Spencer Invitational.

Cross country has been Okoboji’s strongest fall sport in recent years, and that could continue this fall. Coach Brad Peter boasts a boys squad with a wealth of talent and experience…(click here for comment from coach Peter). The girls program has graduated some quality runners of late, leaving this year’s team with just four team member, though all are underclassman. Both teams will run competitively for the first time on Tuesday at the Spencer Invitational.
