Midgets Sweep Indians in Basketball Twinbill

GIRLS

Spirit Lake visited Estherville-Lincoln Central in the regular season finale for the girls on Friday night and it was a game of runs. Spirit Lake scored eight straight to take a five-point lead in the 2nd quarter but ELC answered with a 12-0 spurt. The Indians closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take a one-point edge to the break. But after the Midgets used six in a row to take a two-point lead at the end of the 3rd, they wouldn’t look back. Spirit Lake scored just two field goals in the final 10 minutes, falling to ELC 44-35, and dropping back-to-back games for just the second time this year.

KJ Veldman led the scoring effort with 11. Spirit Lake was without Chelsie Stettnichs for the third straight game as she nurses a calf injury. Stettnichs should be available for next Saturday’s regional contest.

After the win, ELC waited for the outcome in a contest between Spencer and Storm Lake. The Tornadoes defeated Spencer 49-40 to lock up the lone share of the Lakes Conference title. ELC finishes the regular season at 12-2 in the Lakes Conference, a game back of Storm Lake, while the Indians close out in 3rd at 9-5.

BOYS

For just the second time in nine seasons, Estherville-Lincoln Central defeated Spirit Lake, knocking off the Indians 57-43 on Friday night. With the game tied at 25, ELC used a 9-0 spurt to take the lead and the Indians would get no closer than five the rest of the way. Spirit Lake trailed 16-4 early before scoring 15 straight to take its only lead of the night. Drew Dau scored 15 to lead the Indians who head to Emmetsburg on Tuesday for their regular season finale.
