Midgets Advance to State (Girls Basketball RoundUp)

In girls basketball, numerous teams throughout the state grabbed regional titles Monday night and punched their ticket to the state tournament in Des Moines. In Class 2A, Estherville-Lincoln Central needed overtime to defeat Kuemper Catholic 52-49, sending the Midgets to the state tourney. Sara Heywood hit a key three-pointer near the end of regulation to tie it at 45-all and Emily Kirchner’s block of an attempted three to tie it in overtime sealed the win. Kirchner finished with 17 points. ELC’s first opponent at state will be Pella Christian, who defeated Van Buren, 63-32. That game will be at 11:45am on Tuesday, March 1.

The rest of the Class 2A field consists of top-ranked OA-BCIG, who eliminated Western Christian 72-59, West Fork, IKM-Manning, Monticello, Roland-Story, and Mount Ayr.

In Class 1A, Newell-Fonda is heading to Wells Fargo Arena after defeating Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn 67-52 last night. Joining them at state will be Bedford, Ar-We-Va, Bellevue Marquette Catholic, West Hancock, Martensdale St. Mary’s, Lynnville-Sully, and North Mahaska.
