Harris-Lake Park’s record setting season found its conclusion Tuesday night with an uncharacteristic three-set loss on the road against George-Little Rock, 25-13, 25-17, 25-13 in the second round of the Class 1A girls volleyball tournament. The Lady Wolves received nine kills and a service ace from sophomore Lydia Brandt. Freshman Noreen Morrow tacked on five kills and a block, while Leah Duitsman had four kills. Senior Sam Brueggeman registered double-digit digs in her final game in blue and white. HLP ends the year with 25 match victories, a new single season school record, along with nine losses. The Mustangs, meanwhile, advance to Friday’s regional semifinal in Hull, where they will take on seventh-ranked Boyden-Hull, who dispensed Akron-Westfield in four-sets, 25-19, 25-15, 24-26, 25-9.
In other Class 1A action, Ruthven-Ayrshire was swept in the quarterfinals by Bishop Garrigan in three sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-16. The Golden Bears advance to play Cornbelt Conference champion North Sentral Kossuth, who needed just three games to eliminate West Bend-Mallard, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14.
Tuesday was also the second round of the Class 2A tournament, and Estherville-Lincoln Central had no answers for the top-ranked Western Christian Wolfpack, falling in three sets, 25-10, 25-10, 25-15. Western will now battle Sioux Center, who defeated Central Lyon. The other regional semifinal will pit Sheldon against Unity Christian. The Orabs swept their way past Sioux Central, and Unity took down Hinton.
