Lady Indians Drop Two Straight; Boys Fall in Overtime

GIRLS

Spirit Lake did not trail in the first 31 minutes until Jessica Ackerman scored two of her 18 points with 59 seconds to go to give Sibley-Ocheyedan its first lead, one the Generals wouldn’t relinquish. For the second straight night, second half shooting for the Indians struggled as Spirit Lake scored just four field goals in the final 16 minutes and the Generals outscored Spirit Lake 16-5 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 39-34 victory. Mary Brown was the high scorer with just seven, the Indians went 2-23 from 3-point range and with the loss, dropped back-to-back games for the first time this year. Spirit Lake (9-3) will take on Worthington (MN) on Monday night, a contest originally scheduled for last Thursday.

BOYS

Fresh off their first conference win on Friday night, the Spirit Lake boys were back at it on Saturday with Sibley-Ocheyedan in town for a non-conference game. The Indians looked like they were en route to back-to-back wins for the first time since the opening two games of the year. The Indians didn’t trail until the 5:10 mark of the fourth quarter when their ten point lead was suddenly vanquished by a 17-4 Sibley run. The Indians would jump back out in front 54-52, but Sibley’s Nic Marco was fouled with no time left on the clock, awarded two free throws, and coolly knocked both down to send the game to overtime.

The Generals would score the first seven of the extra session and keep enough cushion between themselves and the Indians to come away with a 69-65 win. Spirit Lake (5-7) will get back to conference action on Friday with a Lakes dual at home against Emmetsburg.
