Six boys and girls were named district champions of the 2010 Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge. The Iowa Great Lakes council 5043, Spirit Lake, sponsored the competition Sunday at the Bedell Family YMCA in Spirit Lake. Youngsters ages 10-14 were eligible to participate.
In the 11-year-olds’ bracket, Madison Schnetzer was the girls’ champion and Ethan Hansen was the boys’ champion. Twelve-year-old winners in the girls’ and boys’ divisions were Amanda Ward and Cody Kofron. The 13 -year-old girls’ division was won by Jordan Hansen and the 14-year-old boys’ champion was Adam Johnson. All had advanced from the local competition in Spencer.
Each of these winners will compete in the regional competition to be held Sunday, October 2 at the Spencer soccer fields, with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels.
Sponsored annually, the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge has winners progressing
through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based in New Haven, CT on scores from the state-level competitions.
The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest lay Catholic organization, with more than 1.8 million members in North and Central America, Asia and Europe. Last year, Knights donated $145 million and more than 68 million hours of volunteer time to charitable causes.
The Iowa Great Lakes Council 5043 sponsors a number of charitable events, including the Tootsie Roll drive for persons with intellectual disabilities, annual free throw competition, omelet breakfasts, graduating senior recognition Sunday, and bingo at Oak Haven Care Facility. Its biggest event is the Soup and Pie Supper, which is coming up Sunday, October 31 at the Spirit Lake Expo Center.
