Despite the reports Monday that he was staying put, Iowa State basketball coach Greg McDermott is leaving to take over at Creighton in Nebraska. He led Northern Iowa to the NCAA tournament three years in a row before joining Iowa State in 2006. He’s never had a winning season with the Cyclones but made $900,000 last year and was signed through 2015. Creighton sports information director Rob Anderson announced the news in a text message to members of the media on Monday. Whoever takes over at Creighton will inherit a program that was at or near the top of the Missouri Valley Conference for most of Altman’s 16-year tenure.
