Iowa Olympians Enjoy Success in London

Des Moines-native Miranda Leek has concluded her
competitions in women’s archery. The 19-year old entered the individual
tournament portion as the #14 seed, and defeated Kateryna Palekha of Ukraine,
6-2, in the round of 64. Leek then lost, 6-4, to Pia Lionetti of
Italy in round of 32. The Dowling Catholic graduate and her USA teammates began the team tournament with a bye in the
opening round, but lost in the quarterfinals, 218-213, to eventual silver
medalist, China.

In gymnastics, Gabby Douglas has become a rising star in London. The 16-year old,
who trains in Des Moines, helped Team USA to its
second team gold in Olympic history. She had the top U.S. scores in the uneven bars and
beam during that competition. The “Flying Squirrel” also qualified for the
Individual All-Around with a score of 60.265, besting teammate and defending
World Champion Jordan Wieber by .233. Douglas and Aly Raisman will compete
Thursday for an individual gold medal.
