The Iowa Lakes softball team opened the Region XI Tournament with a 14-1 victory over Southwestern Community College at Harlan Rogers Park in Fort Dodge, IA, Friday afternoon. The Lakers had two, three-run home runs in the second inning to take a 8-0 lead. That was followed by a Julia Rubek grand slam in the third inning. Iowa Lakes’ 16-hit afternoon was lead by Michelle Thille and Kelsey Ennenga who were both 3-3. Julia Rubek and Jayde Cherkas went 2-2. Taylor Mackey and Julia Nealer shared time on the mound, both striking out three batters.
“It’s always great to start the regional tournament with a victory,” head Coach Shane Bouman said, “the game against Central tomorrow will come down to great pitching and defense.”
The Lakers will face Iowa Central Community College at 1 pm on Saturday.
