Spirit Lake girls golf continued their successful start to the 2011 season with a triangular win at Storm Lake Monday, defeating the Tornadoes and Emmetsburg. The Indians finished with a team total of 193, besting the E-Hawks by 29 strokes and Storm Lake by 80. Maureen Owens was the meet medalist at 42 and fellow senior Leah Hilpipre was runner-up by a shot, with a 43. Spirit Lake also counted a pair of 53’s from Amanda Williams and Whitney Berkland.
In other girls golf, Okoboji finished third at the Siouxland Conference tour meet in Hull, finishing 14 shots back of MOC-Floyd Valley’s 195. Sioux Center took second and Sibley-Ocheyedan came in seventh. The Dutch’s Mallory Simmelink was meet medalist with a 46. The Pioneers Kiley Wermersen finished in a tie for second with a 47. The other top Okoboji scores were Kristina Kaiser at 52 and Hannah Jones with a 53.
The Okoboji boys traveled to Sibley for their Siouxland Conference tour meet and also came away with a third place finish. MOC-Floyd Valley was the winner at 155, Sibley-Ocheyedan placed second with a 165, and the Pioneers notched a 169. Meet medalist was Mitch McDonough with a 36 for MOC-FV. James Halbur of Okoboji grabbed third place with a 38 to pace the Pioneers, who also got a 40 from Micah Baschke and a 45 from Tyler Ohl.
Harris-Lake Park and Sioux Central met up for a girls and boys golf match to open the 3rd Tin Cup Competition and the 2011 season. The HLP boys won the first day of competition as the players paired up for a 4-ball challenge. Nathan Kyle shot a 38 to lead all golfers. Jacob Ihnen had a 41 for the Wolves. The Rebels were paced by Seth Rachuy’s 39. As for the girls portion of the competition, Sioux Central would shoot 14 strokes better than HLP behind Presley Herrig’s round of 50. Sam Brueggeman led Harris-Lake Park with a 52. Macy Gunderson registered a 54 and Mariah Gath put up a 56.
