Indians Win Lakes Conference Golf Titles (Golf RoundUp)

In one single night, Spirit Lake
High School claimed not
one, but two Lakes Conference golf championships. A 62-stroke difference is
what resulted in Tuesday’s Lakes Conference girls’ golf dual between
Estherville-Lincoln Central and Spirit
Lake at Okoboji View. The
league-leading Indians throttled the Midgets by a 372-434 margin to remain
undefeated in conference play. Whitney Berkland shot an 18-hole total of 87 to
grab medalist honors, with teammate Amanda Williams carding a 91 as the
runner-up. Spirit
Lake also received a 94
from Taylor Reitz and a 100 by Hannah Weidemeier. ELC counted a 103 by Paige
Huffmeyer, a 104 on the card of Aryn Ward, Rachel Lausen came in with a 111,
and Brittany Busch contributed a 116.

The Spirit
Lake boys clinched their
conference title with a triangular win over Cherokee and Western Christian on
the Braves home course Tuesday. The Indians team total of 165 topped both
squads by a baker’s dozen, as the Wolfpack and Braves each came in with a 178.
Jake Spindler of Cherokee had the best individual day, firing a round of 37 as
the meet medalist. Spirit
Lake’s Zach Skopec and
Scott Hummel tied for second at 40, though Skopec earned the runner-up spot in
a playoff. The Indians also tallied scores of 42 by Matt Heaton and a 43 from Tate
Hanson. Spirit Lake,
at 6-1 in the conference, will share the 2012 title with Storm Lake.

Just one day removed from a tight competition for second and
third in the Cornbelt Conference, rivals Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire
and Harris-Lake Park met on the links in Graettinger.
The girls dual again went to the Lady Wolves by a score of 231-251. Macy
Gunderson was atop the leaderboard with a 48. HLP’s other scores included a 57
by Amanda Hibma, a 61 from Emily Anderson and a 65 for Rachel Vellema.

Also in the Cornbelt, the North Union
boys golf team lost at West Bend-Mallard, 187-200. Sawyer Doocy paced the
Warriors with a runner-up score of 45.
