Trailing by just seven at halftime, the Spirit Lake boys basketball team was outscored by twelve in the third quarter of Monday night’s Class 3A District playoff opener, eventually falling to MOC-Floyd Valley 83-60. Four Indians reached double digits, led by Mitch Peschon’s 18 points. He hit four three-pointers. Paul Brown finished with twelve points, Wes Bergquist had eleven and Sawyer Harms notched ten. The Indians’ season closes with a 7-14 record. The Dutch, who received a game-high 25 points from reserve senior Doug Keady and 22 from Dan Jansen, advance to the district finals. There they will face Webster City, who took care of Humbolt, 47-27. That game will be played Thursday in Spencer.
The Spencer Tigers also saw their season end in the first round of the playoffs, as Carroll led from start to finish in an 85-52 ballgame. Jordan Holdsworth had 27 points and was one of three Carroll players in double figures. Spencer’s Alex Hyde registered 14 points and Matthew Klemme had 13 points. The Tigers were 4-18 on the season. Carroll moves on to play Storm Lake, who defeated Algona 86-68. That game will be Thursday in Fort Dodge.
