Monday was the opening night on the ball diamonds throughout
Iowa.
Spirit Lake hit the road for their baseball opener, and returned with a 6-2 triumph over Central Lyon in a non-conference showdown. Brandon Stoll picked up the win with eight strikeouts on the hill, while Paul Brown led the offensive charge with two hits and three RBI. The Indians will return to the field Tuesday at George-Little Rock.

The Spencer Tigers opened with a baseball win, beating the
Sheldon Orabs, 7-2.
In Estherville, the Midgets were swept in a non-conference
baseball doubleheader against Algona Bishop Garrigan. The Golden Bears won the
opener by an 8-0 final, then took the nightcap, 4-2
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire was shutout in their
season debut, falling 6-0 against Storm Lake St. Mary’s.
And George-Little Rock’s Judd Rosenboom struck out 19
batters en route to a season opening no-hitter, as the Mustangs topped Trinity
Christian, 5-0.
On the softball diamond, Emmetsburg won a tight contest
against county rival West Bend-Mallard, 5-4. The E-Hawks start the season 1-0.
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrhire fell short in their debut
as a softball co-op, suffering a 7-1 setback at Storm Lake St. Mary’s.
