The season opener of the 2011 baseball season brought with it some late-game fireworks for the Spirit Lake Indians, who defeated Central Lyon, 4-3, on Monday. Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the sixth, senior caption Mitch Peschon stepped to the plate with two on and nobody out, and belted a 2-0 offering well beyond the left field wall to give the Indians a one-run lead. Fellow senior Zach Herrig drove in the other run an inning earlier with a RBI double to score Paul Brown. Brown would then take over in relief of starting pitcher Tayler Acton to close out the win, striking out three of the seven batters faced in the final two innings. Acton struck out six and allowed three runs on five hits. Peschon finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs driven in and one scored. Spirit Lake returns to the diamond this evening as George-Little Rock comes to town.
Spirit Lake hit the road Monday to open the 2011 softball season and returned with the season’s first win, an 8-3 decision over West Bend-Mallard. The Indians notched ten hits on the night, led by Paige Krause. The sophomore smashed a three-run homer to right-centerfield as part of a two-hit, four-RBI night. Amanda Bueltel also recorded two hits, while six others had a hit apiece.
Spirit Lake is back at it this evening with another road contest, this time against county rival Okoboji. The Indians and Pioneers will take the field in Milford at approximately 7pm, with pre-game coverage on KUOO Campus Radio around 6:45pm. The game can also be heard live online at Network1Sports.com.
