Indians Pull Away Late Against Wolves, While Okoboji, HMS Win Big (Softball RoundUp)

The Spirit Lake softball team now has official bragging rights in Dickinson County after defeating Harris-Lake Park, 8-2, last night. The Indians busted open a scoreless game with a seven-spot in the fifth inning, thanks in part to four hits and three Wolves’ errors. Cara Vale pitched her way to another win, her third, as she allowed just three hits and struck out eight batters. Alli Gerking went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Spirit Lake offense. Macy Gunderson took the loss for Harris-Lake Park, while offensively fellow freshman Noreen Morrow went 2-for-3 and scored a run. The Indians are now 3-0 on the season and travel to Clay Central-Everly on Friday. The Wolves fall to 1-1 and are off until Tuesday’s matchup at Okoboji.

Elsewhere on the softball diamond, Okoboji notched win number one for 2011, taking a road contest at Algona by a 12-1 final in five innings. Mikkinzie Peschong allowed three hits and struck out three as the winning pitcher. The Pioneers improve to 1-1 and hit the road again Friday to open Siouxland Conference play against Central Lyon/George-Little Rock.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn put a mark in the win column by run-ruling Clay Central-Everly 18-8 in six innings. The Hawks are now 1-1 and will also battle Gehlen Catholic this evening.
