After rallying from eight down in their season opener, the Spirit Lake
softball team was unable to find that same magic on the road Wednesday, falling
to fourth-ranked Newell-Fonda, 14-4, in six innings. Cara Vale and Paige Krause
each had a hit and a RBI, while Mackenzie Thate collected one hit and scored a
run. Pre-freshman Bailee Newman took the loss. The 15th-ranked Indians
will take a 1-1 record to Harris-Lake
Park on Thursday for a
county matchup with the Wolves.
Okoboji began play in the Siouxland Conference on Wednesday
with a trip to Sioux
Center, however, the
Pioneers would succumb to an 8-4 setback. Cheyanne Kopera, Mikkinzie Peschong,
Abby Taylor, and Kiley Wermersen scored the four runs. Okoboji will take
another stab at the season’s first W when they host Algona on Thursday in their
home opener.
Rivals Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and
Estherville-Lincoln Central met on the softball diamond Wednesday. The
twelfth-ranked Midgets eventually pulled away for a 15-5 win in six innings in
their season opener. ELC plays at Forest
City Thursday, while
GT/RA hosts Sibley-Ocheyedan. The Generals will be coming off a conference
loss, falling 13-3 to Central Lyon/George-Little Rock.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn earned its first win of the young
season, defeating non-conference rival Clay Central-Everly, 12-1 in five
innings. Kori Boll drove in three runs on two hits as the Hawks go to 1-1.
Meanwhile, South O’Brien dropped a War Eagle Conference matchup against
Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, 8-1.
Also, Emmetsburg pounded on West Hancock, 12-4, improving to
2-1.
