Several area high school volleyball teams brought their regular seasons to a close with tournaments over the weekend. Most of the Lakes Conference participated in the Storm Lake Invitational. Both the Spirit Lake Indians and the Estherville-Lincoln Central Midgets finished the tournament with impressive 4-1 records, and both with wins over each other. The Indians’ four wins came against Cherokee (21-19, 19-21. 15-12), Emmetsburg (21-7, 21-13), the host Tornadoes (21-15, 21-10), and the Midgets (21-15, 21-16). Their loss to ELC was in three sets to decide the outright champion (18-25, 25-18, 15-13). The statistical leaders for Spirit Lake were Kendra Stokke with 31 kills and Bailey Loveall with 25 kills. Whitney Berkland finished the day with 67 set assists, and Amanda Bueltel collected 39 digs. The Indians finish the regular season with an overall record of 20-7 and will open the Class 3A Regionals at Spencer on October 24. That match will air live on KUOO.
Estherville-Lincoln Central’s other wins came over Cherokee (21-18, 21-15), Emmetsburg (21-13, 21-19), and Storm Lake (21-17, 21-11). The Midgets final record is 23-11 and they will play at Sheldon in the Class 2A Regionals on Tuesday.
The E-Hawks went 0-4 in the tournament, with additional setbacks to Storm Lake (16-21, 21-14, 15-3) and Cherokee (21-14, 21-14). Emmetsburg’s overall record is 3-28 and their opening match in the Class 2A Regionals is at West Hancock on Tuesday. That match can be heard on Y100.
